Being a Church School

What does it mean to be a Church School?

We are proud to be part of the Rochester Diocesan family of schools and to work closely with our local church and wider community.

At Yalding St Peter and St Paul Church of England Primary School, we are a caring and inclusive Christian community where every child is valued, nurtured and encouraged to flourish. Our vision for education is rooted in Christian faith and values, helping children to grow academically, spiritually, emotionally and socially within a supportive and inspiring environment.

As a parent, pupil, visitor or member of staff, you will find that our school strives to offer an excellent education whilst remaining distinctive in its Christian character. Our Christian foundation shapes the way we learn together, care for one another and celebrate the unique gifts and talents of every individual.

Collective Worship

Collective Worship is central to the life and Christian ethos of Yalding St Peter and St Paul Church of England Primary School. It strengthens and supports the Christian identity of our school and reinforces our core values of love, respect and responsibility, while celebrating the important role each child plays within the school and wider community.

Daily acts of Christian worship make a significant contribution to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of the whole school community and are fully supported by staff and governors. Worship takes place in a variety of ways, including whole-school gatherings, online worship and class or key stage worship throughout the week.

Class worship provides opportunities for pupils to reflect more deeply on themes and share their ideas and responses during whole-school worship later in the week.

Older pupils take on leadership roles, working alongside the RE Lead to help plan, evaluate and record acts of worship.

Throughout the year, the whole school visits St Peter and St Paul Church for end-of-term services led by pupils, with parents warmly invited to attend and celebrate alongside the school community.

While our worship is distinctly Christian in character, we are committed to respecting and valuing the beliefs, cultures and faith backgrounds of all members of our community, promoting tolerance, understanding and inclusivity for everyone.

Courageous Advocacy

We recognise that life can be challenging for children and adults alike, and that everyone—locally, nationally and globally—may need support and encouragement to persevere and overcome difficulties.

As part of our Christian vision, we are committed to developing pupils as compassionate, responsible citizens who are aware of injustice and inspired to make a positive difference in the world.

Through our Christian values of love, respect and responsibility, alongside the British Values of democracy, rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance, pupils are encouraged to engage thoughtfully with current issues, reflect on different viewpoints and understand how positive change can be achieved. This is lived out through a range of opportunities for courageous advocacy and social action, where pupils identify needs, raise awareness and take meaningful action within school, the local community and beyond.

Our pupils regularly participate in and lead charitable initiatives and awareness events such as national fundraising days, local food bank support, environmental campaigns and projects supporting both local and global charities. These experiences help pupils to see themselves as active agents of change, developing empathy, resilience and a strong sense of moral purpose, while learning that their actions—however small—can have a real and lasting impact on the lives of others.

Spiritual Development

At Yalding Church of England Primary School, we understand spirituality as a developing awareness that there is something beyond the everyday—something greater than ourselves—which may be expressed through personal experiences, reflection, creativity, and, for some, religious belief and practice. Spiritual development is not dependent on faith affiliation; rather, it relates to the universal human search for meaning, purpose and connection, and the big questions that shape how we understand ourselves and the world around us.

We aim to nurture this from the earliest years by encouraging pupils to notice and reflect on the beauty and wonder of the world, to understand their own place within it, and to consider how their actions, attitudes and choices can help our world to flourish. Spiritual development is therefore woven intentionally through our curriculum and school life, underpinned by our Christian vision and values.

To support this, we provide meaningful opportunities for spiritual growth through three key dimensions: Windows, Mirrors and Doors.

Through Windows, pupils are given opportunities to encounter the world in new and awe-inspiring ways, developing curiosity and a sense of wonder about life, people, nature and global issues.

Through Mirrors, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences, beliefs and feelings, and to consider different perspectives, helping them to develop self-awareness and deeper understanding.

Through Doors, pupils are supported to respond to what they have seen and reflected upon, expressing their learning creatively and taking thoughtful action that reflects their values and growing understanding.

In this way, spirituality at Yalding is active, inclusive and progressive, supporting pupils to become reflective, thoughtful and compassionate individuals who are able to engage meaningfully with life in all its fullness.
